"I was privileged to catch a couple sets by the excellent group Lampano Alley, featuring Binky Lampano's soulful vocals backed up by a very tight blues band." John Bradshaw, Blues Access, summer 2000 issue
"Lampano Alley has blossomed into perhaps the best blues band in Southeast Asia, featuring not just covers of American blues but many truly authentic Pinoy blues delights." "Sweet, Sweet Music: An American Reflection on Filipino Music" Clarence Henderson, Sept. 2000, www.apmforum.com in OrientSeas column. |
LAMPANO ALLEY
may, with the release of this album, earn a spot for Filipino blues on the
international blues stage. Already, the band has put blues on the
musical map in its native Philippines. It has been featured in
numerous newspaper and magazine articles since its inception in 1996.
Three times it has been featured in hour-long nationally
televised concerts from Manila's famed Rizal Park amphitheater, the
country's equivalent to New York's Central Park; these concerts are
frequently rebroadcast over PTV4. The band has guested on the nation's
premier late night TV talk show. Now the band has completed work on
its first self-produced album. Currently the band plays only special
bar tours when its leader Binky Lampano returns to Manila from the US where
he is temporarily based while completing a business degree. The album
has been released now because of unceasing requests from its fans.

photo by Richie Abrina "The first time I heard Binky Lampano and his band Lampano Alley, I closed my eyes and envisioned an Asian version of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Robert Johnson rolled into one. Here was this skinny Filipino guy who looked like he'd just stepped off a jeepney, but singing the blues with a deep dark baritone that brought about images of hellhounds on the trail. And with a name like 'Binky'? Put it in the 'only in the Philippines' category. Binky's deeply blues-infused baritone is now legendary, at least in certain circles. Clarence Henderson, Sept. 2000, www.apmforum.com

BINKY LAMPANO, the leader and vocalist of Lampano Alley, has been
a widely acclaimed fixture in the Philippine alternative music scene since
the mid-1980's. A national TV, film and stage personality recently
summed up his allure in five words: "the voice you can't
forget." The local press seem even more obsessed with
his personality and character and over the years have made him into a near
musical legend in the Philippines. Discover what fascinates the press.

Thomas "TOMCAT" Colvin, an American living in Manila
since 1986, has been a musical associate of Binky's since late 1992.
With their band the Newly Industrialized Combo, the first blues band in
Manila in nearly two decades, they shared the cover of the Philippines'
most widely circulated Sunday news magazine. The local press was
especially intrigued when Tomcat quit a high-paying, prestigious job to go
into music full-time, becoming the most active foreigner in the Philippine
musical scene.

BLUES ACCESS MAGAZINE was intrigued enough with the blues scene
in Manila and Singapore that it ran a feature article "Blues in
Asia" in its summer 2000 issue.
|
"A number of blues bands have stepped into the spotlight; venues are consistently featuring blues; blues has been broadcast over nationwide TV several times over the past year; a popular blues radio show is entering its fourth year..." |
